Keys to Adding a Beautiful Bathroom Accent Wall

If you’ve grown weary of your bathroom and want to give it new appeal, one of the easiest ways to do this is through the creation of an accent wall. There are several ways to accomplish this, and we invite you to keep reading on as we explain some of the basic ways of adding some pizzazz to your bathroom through the creation of a beautiful bathroom accent wall.

What’s an Accent Wall?

A bathroom accent wall is any wall, or part of a wall, that you want to stand out from the rest of the bathroom. This can be accomplished by using different colors, materials, textures, and forms. Among other things, a bathroom accent wall can enhance the room, adding beauty and setting a certain mood.
It will not only make the room more interesting, but as an additional bonus, it may also protect the wall from moisture.

Which Wall to Accent?

Deciding on the wall to accent is, of course, a matter of personal choice. In making your decision, look at each wall, the things on the wall, and possibly any special feature or item that you might want to draw attention to. For example, if you have a beautiful clawfoot bathtub in your bathroom, you might want to accent the wall behind it to draw attention to it. Or you might draw attention to your wonderful walk-in shower by accenting the shower wall.

As a rule of thumb, if you want to add appeal to your bathroom with an accent wall but you’re not sure which wall to choose, select the one that’s directly in the line of sight from the bathroom door.

An Infinite Array of Choices

When it comes to deciding how to accent a bathroom wall, the choices available to you are limited only by your imagination, illustrated by the following examples.

  • Paint – You can take a minimalist approach using different colors of paint on the same wall. As an example, a dark coat of paint could be applied, and after it dries, painters tape can be used to create various geometric designs. Then a second lighter coat of paint is applied, and the tape is removed when this coat dries. Voila, you have a wall containing a variety of geometric designs, each bordered by the first coat of dark paint.
  • Wallpaper – A second somewhat minimalist approach is the use of wallpaper. The patterns available are infinite, and if you get tired of a particular design, it can be rather easily replaced. Also, if you’re worried about wallpaper and bathroom dampness, vinyl wallpaper that is waterproof and durable is readily available on the market. Another approach is to use a water-based varnish or primer to protect the wallpaper.
  • Wood – As an example of the use of wood, a shiplap accent wall can provide a warm and comforting feel to your bathroom. Placed vertically, it will add visual depth to your floor-to-ceiling height, while laid horizontally, shiplap gives an illusion of a wider area, ideal from smaller bathrooms.
  • Tile – As with wallpaper, patterns available are virtually endless. As an example, subway tiles are perfect for creating stunning accent walls, and they’re available in a wide range of colors, shapes and textures to suit your personal taste and style. Another alternative is a wood-effect accent wall made of tiles that look like wood. These are an excellent choice for creating an accent wall behind a shower, and combined with white finishes and cream-colored tiles, they can be used to create a spa-like look.
